Passenger numbers to climb with Origin Game I
Townsville Airport is set to record one of its busiest weeks as State of Origin fans start pouring through the terminal on their way to Game I.
An extra nine return flights are scheduled, with Virgin Australia, Qantas and Alliance all putting on extra services between Townsville and Brisbane and Sydney.
Townsville Airport General Manager Brendan Cook said the airport team had gone to great lengths to celebrate State of Origin Game I, with maroon decorations displayed throughout the terminal.
“As the gateway to North Queensland, we thought it was important to warmly welcome Queensland supporters and ensure NSW supporters knew where our allegiances lie,” he said.
“This is a major event for Townsville and North Queensland and everyone is extremely excited about it.”
Mr Cook said the terminal would be extremely busy until Thursday as a result.
“We ask everyone who is traveling during this period to be patient and, where possible, plan ahead,” he said.
“To make transport easier, we have worked closely with the Queensland Government, Sunbus and Townsville City Council to ensure shuttle buses are running from Townsville Airport during peak periods on Tuesday and Wednesday and back to the airport on Thursday.”
Townsville Enterprise will have meeters and greeters in the terminal during peak arrival periods providing helpful maps for visitors to navigate the city during their stay and other key information.
