Big cheers as airport bar marks first anniversary
Passengers and staff are raising a collective glass to mark the first anniversary of Townsville Airport’s new café and bar – aptly named The Bar.
The venue, which opened its doors in May last year, has proved a big hit with customers, with its expanded food and beverage offering.
Locally produced beverages are given preference including ever-popular drops such as Townsville Bitter and Tropical Coast Pale Ale.
Managed by Lagardère Travel Retail, The Bar is styled in the image of Townsville Brewery in Flinders Street, with whom the airport team is working closely.
Townsville Airport General Manager Commercial Isabelle Yates congratulated The Bar on marking its first birthday.
“The Bar has been a wonderful addition to the terminal and has certainly gone down well with our passengers – particularly those keen to quench a big thirst on a hot North Queensland day,” she said.
“We are pleased to be able to showcase locally produced food and drinks, something that has been well received by our customers, especially our partnership with Townsville Brewery. As the gateway to North Queensland, it is important to leave a positive and lasting impression on our passengers.”
The Bar manager Tracy Ruddle, who came on board to manage the small team earlier this year, said she was enjoying introducing the team to the fine art of pouring the perfect beer.
“We have a wonderful team of 10 staff members who range from future doctors and vets to nurses and marine biologists,” she said.
“With such a range of personalities, both within our team and our guests, it certainly makes each day rewarding and sometimes challenging. Everyone has a story to tell and that's why I love working at the airport.
"You need to reach people's hearts and minds and to understand their journey starts with us, whether it’s our FIFO workers, business travelers or families going on holidays.”
The Bar offers a good selection of local brews, as well as café quality coffee and food, including fresh breads and pastries produced by local artisan bakers.
The Bar is open seven days a week, from 4.30am until the last departure flight, with the café running from breakfast through to dinner.
