Between 06/07 and 07/08 Townsville Airport experienced a 7.2% growth in passengers. Over the past six years the Airport has seen an 11.6% Average Annual Growth Rate.

Passenger Mix
Townsville Airport’s passenger mix is evenly spread between business and leisure traffic both in and outbound, providing year round market stability. The itinerant population generates a strong visiting friends and relatives (VFR) market. Townsville’s inbound tourism market is growing as the destination develops.  Locals make up over 40% of passengers, which is a significant proportion, amounting to over 600,000 passenger movements per year. The frequency of air travel for locals is evidenced by the fact the region has a population of only 160,000 in the immediate catchment area.

Reason for Travel
Visitors to the region travelling by air are primarily from the South East Queensland market, reflecting the volume of seat capacity between Brisbane and Townsville.
